Transitioning into a New Year and a New Decade!

A pregant mom holds her toddler daughter against her chest in an embrace while dad hugs the whole family.

Can you believe it?! We are entering a new decade and this lover of New Year celebrations feels extra excited about a new decade approaching!

I have been reflecting upon this last decade for a few weeks now and then I started to dream and wonder about the new decade ahead! Are you reflecting? Dreaming? Excited?

The word I kept thinking of is “transition” and when I took this picture last week I knew I had the perfect image to go with this blog post! I love how this family did a photoshoot to celebrate their life as a family of three before welcoming a new little one that is due on New Year’s Eve! Talk about kicking off the new year!

In this image, I feel all the emotions of a family transitioning from 3 to 4 members. Parents transitioning into their new roles of parents of two children and perhaps the biggest transition will be for this little sweetie in her Mom’s arms as she becomes a big sister.  They are all holding on to what was with so much love and tenderness and yet everyone is super thrilled and excited to welcome the new baby soon!

My own family is feeling the transition too!  2010-2019 was all about becoming a family. I got pregnant with Jaxson in 2010 and then gave birth to him in the spring of 2011. When I think of this decade it feels like the decade was dedicated to becoming a Mom and figuring out all that comes with the new role while also balancing my career. (I’m still figuring it out!)  We also moved from NYC to Santa Cruz CA. While we enjoyed Santa Cruz we moved again to El Dorado Hills in 2017. Sometimes when I think about this last decade it makes me exhausted!!! Becoming a parent, moving across the country, changing cities in California not only for my family but my job too! Whew!

2019 did not start easy for us though I do feel it set us up perfectly for transitioning into the new decade. Greg started his own Landscape Architecture firm, Gill Gardens,  in El Dorado Hills CA. I signed on a photography studio this November,  also here in El Dorado Hills where I will be photographing newborns, families, headshots and pets.  And Jaxson is now 8 and well I like to all him Mr. Independant!  It’s incredible to see him as a big kid now and able to do so much for himself! I said to him the other day, “Jaxson you don’t even need me for much anymore!” He thought about it and responded, “Well I need you for permission to do the things I want to do!” I’m proud of the child he has become and it’s crazy to think that at the end of the next decade he will be 18- an ADULT!!!!

Gone is the decade of nap times, potty training and figuring out early school life- gone is the decade of packing boxes and unpacking boxes!

This new decade we will all have different roles, dreams and goals! I am so excited to see what is in store for us not only as a family but as individuals too.

Wishing you a wonderful New Year and Decade!!!
